(Aug. 8, 2023) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will temporarily close the SW 3rd and Alder SmartPark garage. The closure, scheduled to begin on Friday, Aug. 18, will allow PBOT to make best use of public facilities while enhancing security and maintenance at the city’s four downtown garages that will remain fully operational. Updates on the reopening of the garage will be provided when available.
In 2019, average peak-hour occupancy of the 3rd and Alder parking garage was higher than 90%. In June 2023, the average occupancy decreased to 29%. Overall, garage revenue also continues to decline with a 38% decrease in parking revenue between June 2022 and June 2023. With parking occupancy rates being consistently below pre-pandemic levels, PBOT is consolidating resources and will redirect people driving to the nearby SmartPark garages at SW 4th and Yamhill Street – just two blocks away – and at SW 10th and Yamhill Street.
Access to the ground floor restaurants and retailers — Buffalo Wild Wings, Cuon – Vietnamese Street Food, DarSalam Restaurant & Catering, Medallion Jewelers, and Metro by T-Mobile — will be maintained. Crews have begun preparing for the closure, erecting structures and installing doors in stairwells.
When the closure is complete, all stairwells and vehicle access points will have physical barriers, and elevators will be deactivated. Entry will be closed to incoming users at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 17. All customers should make plans to exit the garage by 8 p.m. on Friday, August 18.
Sidewalk and storefront cleaning will continue and the bureau will maintain security service through this temporary closure. Security dispatch is available. Report trespassing or unwanted activity around the garage to 503-823-7777.
